Mathalon is a mathematics competition between schools in the Lakes Region. Higher level thinking and group problem solving is common in both the competitions and the practice sessions. There are two Mathalon groups: Grade 6 Mathalon and Grade 7/8 Mathalon.
The 6th grade Mathalon competitions are held at
Interlakes
Elementary School
and occur in January, March and April. Topics include whole numbers, fractions, decimals, geometry, word problems and team problems. Practice sessions are held before school on Monday mornings and also during 9th period every Wednesday. PES 6th graders hope to do well this year!
Mathalon 7/8 competitions rotate between schools in the Lakes Region. The first meet was held at
Belmont
Middle School
on November 13th. There were 11 teams present. Categories include arithmetic, pre-algebra, concepts, word problems and team problems. Practice sessions are held every Thursday afternoon in the Conference Room. The remaining competitions will occur in January, February, March and April. Good luck 7th and 8th graders!
